Campus-Wide or Multi-Unit Programs
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Established in 1989, this program places first- and second-year students into research settings to provide them with hands-on experiences in the belief that this research involvement enhances the educational success of undergraduate students.
Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Established in 1980, the Women in Science and Engineering Program now offers an array of activities designed to increase the number of women students who choose majors, advanced degrees, and careers in science, engineering and mathematics. The WISE program views student involvement in research an important component in meeting this goal.
Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) This program matches undergraduates from historically underrepresented groups with a faculty mentor and a research team to help prepare them for graduate school.
University of Michigan Medical School Student Summer Research Program
This program provides research opportunities to eligible undergraduate students to work with Medical School faculty.
YoHA Course Community -- Involving undergraduates in humanities and arts creative work The Course Community was one activity of the 1997-98 Year of Humanities and Arts (YoHA) at the University of Michigan. Minigrants were awarded to course instructors to enable them to more completely link their teaching to scholarly and creative endeavors of the students enrolled in their courses. This program continues in a modified format through the UROP Faculty mini-grant program.
UROP Faculty mini-grant program. This program provides on a competitive basis mini-grants to University of Michigan faculty to support greater involvement of undergraduate students in both course and non-course related research and creative activities. The program is a spin-off of the Year of Humanities and Arts Course Community. The first round of mini-grants have been awarded to more than two dozen faculty members.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites at the UM The National Science Foundation REU program funds universities across the country to offer undergraduate students opportunities to become involved in research. For the summer of 1998, the University of Michigan offered five REU sites, in atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, engineering and physics.
Undergraduate Curriculum Development Testbed (UCDT) A team of professors from six schools and eight departments at the UM are using the curriculum testbed to foster institution-wide reform of undergraduate education. The subject focus on these efforts is in the field of earth system science and global change.
